BMW R 1200 GS – The Most Successful BMW Of All Time

BMW Motorrad celebrated an impressive record on 27 July as the 100,000th R 1200 GS rolled off the production line in Berlin, Germany. Since the introduction of the all-new, lighter and more powerful R 1200 GS in 2004, a staggering 84,373 units have been built, plus an additional 15,627 of its model variant, the R 1200 GS Adventure.

No other BMW motorcycle has been built in such volume and within such a short space of time, thus making the R 1200 GS the most successful BMW motorcycle of all time.

The R 1200 GS is as popular today as it was back then. In 2006, 31,138 units were sold worldwide, making it BMW’s best selling model.

The popularity, supremacy and high volume of sales all underline the unique and universal appeal of the GS ‘Gelande Strasse’ (on/off-road) concept. Until fairly recently, BMW’s GS range of motorcycles was considered a rather niche proposition, used mainly by globetrotters and desert racers. However, the legendary genre has now firmly entered the mainstream, buoyed by a realisation that road-specific suspension, ergonomic efficiency and all-day comfort make more sense in the real world of high insurance premiums, poorly maintained roads and traffic congestion.

Tony Jakeman, Marketing Manager for BMW Motorrad UK, commented, “Here in the UK the GS and GS Adventure have been the best selling bikes, in the Adventure category, for several years. In 2006, the number of GS and GS Adventure registrations, at 2277, made it the best selling motorcycle in the country, so we’re delighted to be celebrating the production of the 100,000th R 1200 GS.

“Sales are looking strong again in 2007, with more and more riders discovering the joys of BMW GS ownership. The R 1200 GS and Adventure version work equally well as everyday commuters, weekend sports bikes and long-distance tourers.”
